Groceries by the Pound

Historically, grocery stores have priced all items, from canned goods to fruit, by unit. An orange was priced as an orange, regardless of the size, unless the grocer wanted to take the time to price them individually. A bag of walnuts taken from a bin was charged by the scoop, and could vary from scoop to scoop depending on who was filling the bag. Needless to say, this was a very primitive method of pricing, and could lead to either the customer or the grocer being short-changed. Enter the retail scale, and grocery itemizing has never been the same.

The retail scale can be several places in a standard grocery store. At the butcher, meat is purchased by the pound. You can ask for a pound of hamburger, a half pound of shrimp, or four pounds of chicken breasts. The retail scale at the counter allows the butcher to provide you with the exact correct amount of meat. He can then wrap it tightly and place a price tag, allowing you to pay for the meat at the checkout stand. Without the retail scale, the meat would have to be cut into portions that looked even. Inevitably some would be larger than others, but all would have to cost the same. This would make it more difficult to shop for meat, as you would always be picking through the pieces looking for the biggest one, always wondering if somebody got more than you for the same price.

The retail scale is also used at the deli counter. Lunchmeat, salads, and cooked food such as chicken wings are on display for the customer to choose at will. The customer can order a pound of potato salad, half a pound of cheese, and two pounds of roast beef, ensuring that he will get exactly that much. Without the scale, it would be very difficult to properly measure portions. They would likely have to be pre-measured, which would make the deli counter unnecessary. People would have a very hard time getting fresh deli goods.

The checkout counter at the grocery store has the most advanced retail scale. Fruits, vegetables, and other produce is weighed and priced right at the cash register. As the teller is checking the customer out, the items that are priced by weight are set on the scale and the price is instantaneously added to the total bill. This is very convenient, saving the teller time in checking the groceries out, and saving the customer time at the store.

The retail scale has revolutionized the grocery industry. The ability to purchase goods by weight allows stores to accurately measure exactly what is being sold and allows customers to get exactly what they want when going to the store. The scales keep pricing fair and simple, ensuring that somebody will not fall prey to a store clerk with a stingy scoop or a batch of fruit with vast differences between the size of the individual pieces.

The Romantic Bedroom

The Romantic Bedroom

For any couple, the most romantic room in the house is usually the bedroom. Shying away from the obvious dirty thoughts that popped into your head (you know they did), the bedroom is where you spend your most intimate moments as a couple: Going to sleep next to each other, waking up next to each other, getting dressed and ready for the day, and so on. The bedroom is where you are closest to your significant other, and should be the most romantic room in the house to ensure that the spark between you never dies.

Color is very important. The bedroom is where you sleep. It should be a cool, easy on the eyes color. The paint and furniture color scheme should be soothing, enticing you to relax and forget about either the day ahead or the day you just had. It should not distract you from your significant other. It should help you achieve a state of mellowness, allowing you to focus on the person you love for conversation and intimacy. Stay away from bright colors, they draw the eye and interrupt your thoughts. You should be focused on the other person in the room, not the loudly colored walls. Cool blues, greens, or cream colors can help you ignore the room itself, giving you the chance to pay attention to the person in the room with you.

A fireplace in the room adds to the overall romantic ambiance. The fireplace provides soothing warmth to the room in a much different way than heated air blowing from the vents. A crackling fire sets the mood, making the room seem like another world. Many houses come with fireplaces in the bedroom. Whether a wood-burning or gas fireplace, both will help you get closer to your one true love on a cold night. For those houses without a fireplace in the bedroom, an electric fireplace is the answer. Electric fireplaces can be put wherever you have the space. All that is required is a standard wall outlet. Many electric fireplaces have a digital picture of a crackling fire, making it hard to distinguish from a real fireplace. The heat that the system outputs is controllable, ensuring that you and your partner are warm but comfortable. A fireplace will help to make your bedroom feel like a remote cabin in the woods. How romantic is that?

Comfortable bedding is a must to keep you close in the bedroom. Rough, crinkly, and lumpy sheets, mattress, and pillows will only distract you. You should purchase bedding that both of you enjoy. Find a happy medium on the firmness and size of a mattress. Find a thread count for sheets that both of you find comfortable. Purchase pillows that suit your sleeping style, different types are perfectly acceptable since they will be covered with a pillow case.

The bedroom is the most intimate location in your home. Taking the time and effort to ensure that it is as comfortable as possible will pay off through an increased connection with your loved one.
