Problem
One of the biggest problems people complain about at church, is not being able to hear what the speaker/ pastor/ minister, etc is saying. They complain that the sound is too echo-y, and that when the choir sings, or music is played, that it all sounds mixed up and smeared. An emphatic part of a sermon can’t be “felt” because it is too hard to make out what is being said, or during a praise band song, the low notes are wobbly, and what could have been a very well intentioned performance by the band, or a very well executed talk by the pastor or priest is reduced to a few words here and there that one might be able to understand. The patron of the church walks away with part of what was said, but not all of it. And the part they do remember, is not something they are sure they heard. The idea and effectiveness of the message is reduced because the clarity of the sound is terrible.
Cause
Sound bounces off hard surfaces, and this is often called “echo”. If you stand in a large room like a church, with lots of hard surfaces (floors, walls, windows, ceiling, etc) and make a sound, that sound will travel at 1000 ft per second. The number of times this sound bounces off these hard surfaces and the volume of such factor into how this sound is heard. The time it takes for this sound to dissipate in the room is called decay time. In a large room, sounds can bounce around a lot, and for a very long time. Now, imagine you multiply these echos by the hundreds or thousands and you’ll find yourself either confused by that sound, or just fed up. Sounds that continue to bounce around in a room cause ear fatigue, and can make people tired or disoriented. Worse, lots of harsh sounding echo can spoil an otherwise beautiful sermon or musical number from the choir, soloist or band. It drives people out more than it drives them “in” and can make it hard to keep people coming back.
Solution
Acoustical “absorbers” are the best way to rid your church of harsh sounds and echos. These very simple devices can help to reduce or eliminate a lot of echo and smeary sound that can cause ear fatigue, make it hard to understand speech, music and other sounds. Acoustical absorbers – e.g. bass traps, acoustic panels, echo absorbers, etc work by literally absorbing the sounds that would otherwise bounce off the hard surfaces of the room. Now, instead of saying something in the room, and having people hear it directly from your mouth AND from echos, they hear it only from your mouth or from the speakers in your church (or other room). This is the delivery of pure sound from the sound source, and not from reflective echos all over the room. This means you’ll hear much greater clarity in voices, and from music and other sounds. Getting sound directly from the source of the sound, and not from echos means that the message and impact of the sound can be heard and felt easily. Installing acoustic absorbers – acoustic panels or “bass traps” from any number of companies (including Ready Acoustics), can change your church experience into something amazing. No more smeary sound, or harsh echo – just pure sound that can captivate and transform you every time you sit down to listen.
